Community Awareness & Treatment Services, Inc. (CATS), is a private, nonprofit organization founded in 1978 to provide a continuum of care for people with drug and alcohol abuse problems. Over time, our services have evolved to specifically focus on helping the homeless in San Francisco, with the primary goals of promoting positive, lasting change and reducing street deaths.

Who we serve
Unlike many homeless services organizations in the San Francisco area, CATS focuses on the "hardest to serve" homeless-those multiply-diagnosed with chronic addiction, mental illness, physical disabilities, HIV+/AIDS, Hepatitis C, Tuberculosis, and other health problems, as well as veterans, survivors of domestic violence, sex workers/prostitutes, and transgenders in San Francisco.

This population simply falls beyond the capabilities of many treatment programs and organizations. With well-established, synergistic programs, CATS is able not only to reach them, but also to provide vital support throughout a course of appropriate treatment.

The CATS evolution
CATS has grown extraordinarily over the last 25 years and currently serves over 6,000 clients a year through 8 programs with more than 110 trained staff. These 8 programs taken together have the capacity to serve every point of need-and every segment of our target population-from first outreach, through comprehensive treatments, to follow-up support and permanent housing. This is the heart and structure of the CATS "continuum of care."

Within the CATS network are designated programs to serve women, men and the elderly aged 55 and over, answering the need to feel safe and understood in the process of recovery and transformation.
