A fleet of eight vans operates 24-hours a day, every day of the year, transporting more than 60,000 homeless and/or substance abusers to needed services annually. MAP also responds to radio contacts from emergency medical services, including 911 and police.

Areas of MAP service
Though best-known for its first contact on the street and safe transportation to detox and shelters, MAP actually comprises four main areas of services:
  • Outreach, as an integral part of the San Francisco Homeless Outreach Team
  • Substance Abuse Transportation
  • Adult Shelter (Multi-Service Center Shelters & Coordinated Referral)
  • Family Shelter Service
Outreach - San Francisco Homeless Outreach Team (SFHOT)
MAP is an integral part of Mayor Gavin Newsom's new outreach collaborative San Francisco Homeless Outreach Team (SFHOT). MAP outreach workers, licensed mental health workers and city outreach workers form a skilled team offering comprehensive services to the homeless person on the street.

These trained teams provide intensive outreach to chronic and hard to serve homeless persons with the goal of providing long-term housing and treatment to address multiple problems. They spend time building rapport and trust among homeless clients, link them with resources, and provide support to ensure services.

With this program, the city is establishing a way to connect clients quickly and efficiently to benefits counseling, mental health and substance abuse treatment, and housing.

Outreach workers also enlist community support to address neighborhood concerns about homelessness in their area, offering constructive ways of dealing with complex issues. And on an ongoing basis, they gather data critical to a thorough understanding of this difficult problem.

Substance Abuse
Transportation is provided to:
a) Appropriate individuals who are willing to accept transportation to reception services
b) Clients within the reception/detox system

Adult Shelter/MSC
We can provide transportation to clients around the Bay Area, who need delivery to and from outside support services. MAP also operates the Human Services Agency Coordinated Referral (CR) system to help maximize adult shelter usage daily. From 6:00 PM to 12:00 midnight daily, our CR dispatchers are available to match turnaway shelter clients with vacancies in the adult shelter system.

MAPFAM
Family members can utilize our daily scheduled service from designated family shelters to downtown drop-off. We also provide on-call transport to services for families referred by designated family service providers.

MAP is a diverse but integrated service in which all drivers are trained in the four main areas, with specific assigned responsibilities to ensure efficient service provision.

When not responding to calls, MAP vans patrol the streets for substance abusers and homeless people in need of assistance. Transport is provided only to those willing to go.

MAP in your neighborhood
MAP aims to be an integral part of the community's answer to homeless needs. To that end, we encourage the community to call on MAP for assistance in their neighborhood. Requests for substance abuse, family and first response outreach service can be made by calling 415-431-7400.
