So Real and So True

Successful Life Transitions

For many at-risk homeless individuals, a second chance is hard to come by. Finding the kind of help they need to make lasting changes is harder still. With CATS, it's possible. And each person we help to make these significant transformations becomes an important addition to a healthy community core.

Robert - Clean and sober since February 2004

"They showed me how to believe in something-in myself."

Robert tried to achieve sobriety three separate times in his thirty years of drinking, until he finally succeeded with CATS. His substance abuse was fueled by a desire to escape the complexities of living with cerebral palsy. It was at CATS that he realized he could get out of the dangerous cycle he was in. "All these people cared for me when I didn't care about myself. They understood me. And they helped me understand I could do this."

Jamie - Clean and sober since January 2000

"CATS is the steppingstone to get your life back."

After 13 years of abusing drugs and prostituting to support her habit, Jamie knew she had to change. That's when she found CATS. A Woman's Place gave her the tools she needed to get back on her feet, free from drugs. And now, as a case worker there, she uses her experiences to help other clients do the same. "CATS teaches a person straight from the streets about responsibility. About how to live. All the necessities of life that help you stay on track."

Dan - Clean and sober since December 2002

If you want to change, they'll make sure it happens.

As a truck driver, Dan managed to survive long-term alcohol abuse by squeezing it in between driving gigs. When he finally hit the bottom, he'd been homeless for three years, capping off three decades of a dangerous drinking habit. "CATS took me in unconditionally. They accept you as you are and you're still pretty rough. They know how to prepare you for a life of being sober."

Now Dan resides as house manager for CATS' Golden Gate for Seniors, where his peers refer to him as "the Professor" for his teacherly demeanor.

Harold - Clean and sober since July 2004

The CATS support system makes it easier.

Once a pastor in an Oakland church, Harold relapsed from fifteen years sobriety in January of 2004. Six months of renewed alcohol abuse left him homeless and devastated. Ineligible for Salvation Army assistance due to his age, Harold felt he had nowhere to turn-until he found CATS. "I came here to Golden Gate for Seniors in July of 2004. And they have provided me a way of getting my life together. They gave me the tools. It's truly unfortunate there's not more programs for seniors."
